Lining up the notch

If the notch and grip won't line up, stop and call rather than peeling the liner. Once you're happy, mark the position with painter's tape.

The bond is to the paint, so inspect the door for flaking or faded clear coat, chips, and bubbles, paying attention to the area around the finger grip where hands touch the door. Clean the door with soap and water, rinse, dry, and degrease. Do the notch-first dry fit described above and mark it. Peel the liner, align with the marks and the grip, and press firmly over the whole trim, especially along the notch edge. Press again after a minute. Why the notch helps
Beyond the look, a notch gives you something physical to align to. Flat plates rely on judging an even border by eye; here the grip and the notch either line up or they don't, which takes much of the guesswork out of centering.
Finish and care
Polished 304 stainless is bright and reflective, and 26 gauge keeps it thin. Install on a mild, dry day and let the tape cure overnight. Clean gently with mild soap and a soft cloth, and wipe off fuel drips.
