The tape is only as good as the surface it meets, so start with the six posts. Take off wax and polish. Repair any paint that's chalky, crazed or lifting. Wash with car-soap water, rinse and dry thoroughly. Then go over each post with rubbing alcohol on a lint-free cloth, refolding until the cloth stays clean, and feel along it for dents.
Pick a dry, still day and work in the shade. Check the six against their photos and let us know right away about any damage. Put a numbered strip of painter's tape at each post for its cover. Keeping the liner on, hold the first in place, adjust until the margin is even all round and outline it in tape. Peel the liner, set the cover in the outline and press firmly from end to end and along both edges. Inspect it from a step or two back, checking that the margin still looks even, before going on to the next cover.
