Putting it in place
Start with a clean surface: soap and water, a rinse, a thorough dry, and then a degreaser wipe until the cloth comes away clean. Next comes a dry run. Keep the liner on, hold the cover against the closed door, and nudge it around until the gap of paint on every side is the same. It helps to have someone stand back and tell you when it looks centered. Mark the position with small strips of painter's tape. Then remove the liner, set the cover to your marks in one motion, and press firmly across its entire surface. Give it a second firm press after about a minute. The polished 304 stainless is bright and mirror-like, and the thin 26 gauge sheet sits close against the door without changing how it closes when properly fitted.
After installing
Work on a mild, dry day and give the tape overnight to set before exposing it to water. Ongoing care is just mild soap and a soft cloth, plus wiping away any fuel drips after a fill-up.
