The gas door trim attaches without drilling; it installs directly over the existing surface. QAA states the tape will hold for a lifetime without causing any damage to the surface of the vehicle. For that to hold true on your car, the paint underneath needs to be in good order. Look at the door for weathered or flaking clear coat, chips around its edges and any blistering, and fix those before fitting the trim. Also check that the door shuts flush and stays closed.
Fitting goes like this. Wash the door with soapy water, rinse and dry it, and wipe the face with a degreaser until a clean cloth picks up nothing. Close the door, then hold the trim against it with the liner still on and shift it until the paint visible around its outline is even. A helper standing back can tell you when it's centered. Mark the spot with painter's tape, peel the liner, and lower the trim onto the marks. Press hard across the face and along the edges, wait about a minute, and press again. Polished 304 stainless has a bright, reflective look, and the 26 gauge sheet keeps the trim thin. Work on a mild, dry day and give the tape overnight before it sees water. After that, clean with mild soap and a soft cloth, and wipe away any fuel drips.
