Inspect first
On an SUV from these years, the fuel door has been through plenty of weather and fill-ups. Look at it in good light. Is the paint whole, or are there chips, chalky fading, or lifting clear coat? Repair those first; the tape can only grip as well as the paint does. Make sure the door opens freely and sits flush when shut.
The cleaning step
This is the part people rush. Wash the door face with soap and water, rinse, and then wipe with degreaser until the cloth comes away clean. Wax, sealant and road film are what stop tape from bonding. Let the surface dry completely.
Placing and pressing
With the liner still on, hold the trim on the closed door. Move it until the band of paint visible around it is even on every side, step back to confirm, and mark the spot on the body with painter's tape. Peel the liner, line up, and press firmly over the whole surface, center out. Repeat after a minute. Open the door slowly to confirm it clears. The Installation tab covers the same steps.
Getting the border even
A helper makes this easy. One person holds the trim while the other stands a few steps back and calls out small moves. Check from straight on and from an angle. Once both sides of the border look the same, mark it.
Timing
A dry, mild day is ideal. Avoid cold paint and strong direct sun, and keep it dry overnight.
Care
Mild soap and a soft cloth. Wipe off any fuel drips after filling.

- Unpack the piece and hold it in position to confirm the fit before mounting it.
- Each piece mounts with 3M automotive-grade acrylic foam tape, so clean and dry the mounting surface first; the tape needs paint or trim free of dirt and wax.
- Align the piece and press it firmly into place directly over the existing surface, working along its full length so the tape bonds evenly.
